WHY I SKATEBOARD
So many reasons. I have been skateboarding for 17 years and I just have not been able to stop. I mean stopping has not even crossed my mind. It gets me outside, it’s very good exercise, keeps my mind healthy and it’s my favourite form of transport. Skateboarding with my friends is my favourite thing about it. Discussing tricks, encouraging and inspiring each other. Working hard to get a trick and then finally landing it is one of the greatest feelings in the world, which is doubled when your friends see you and congratulate you. Skateboarding is socialising, sport, art & culture. It is a huge part of my life. I am at a point now where my priority in skateboarding is enjoying myself. I am still progressing, and I love learning new things, but enjoying the session is a must, and I do not push myself too hard or beat myself up. Skateboarding is about the freedom to do whatever you want on your board; enjoy it!
MY FAVOURITE TRICKS
Body Varial Rock on a quarter pipe or half pipe. It is a trick not many skateboarders seem to do, and most people seem impressed when I do it!
ADVISE TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE JUST STARTED SKATEBOARDING
Relax. The less you fear the better you will get. The more chilled out you are the more you will enjoy yourself. Do not beat yourself up if you can not get something. Come back to it later. Do some things you can do, and remember how amazing it is you can do any of this stuff. Anything you can do on a skateboard is rad, it is nott about being the best, just skate how you want to skate.
MY FAVOURITE TEACHING STORY
The day when two of my students (who I taught separately) got their first shove-its! Always an incredible feeling when your student gets a trick, and to have both achieve on the same day was really cool.
