WHY I SKATEBOARD
I got into skateboarding after religiously playing Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3. I made it a personal mission to finish the game with every character. One character in particular was Rodney Mullen. When I watched his ending video after finishing the game with him, I thought “No way, he can really do that? I thought that was only something you do in the game.”
So I searched him up on YouTube and did my research on him. The more I watched him skate, and the more I learnt about how he came to skateboarding, the more inspired I became to try out skateboarding for myself.
Next thing I know, I’m now working at Skates & Ladders teaching this wonderful thing to other people. I love it.
MY FAVOURITE TRICKS
Tough one. Has to be Tre Flip, Impossible, Pressure Varial Heelflip, and an Ollie Late Laser Flip. The one trick I would love to be able to do however, are Caballerial Kickflips. They look so fun.
ADVISE TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE JUST STARTED SKATEBOARDING
Befriend the skateboarders who are super good, but never compare yourself to them. Everyone learns at their own pace. The good skaters will encourage & motivate you to keep trying. Push yourself to learn new things, but do not be disheartened by failure. Every failure brings you closer to success.
Oh, and make sure you bend your knees properly when you land your tricks; very important.
MY FAVOURITE TEACHING STORY
Probably the time I taught a child how to Kickflip. He was trying for ages and kept on getting it wrong. I stopped him to show him how to set up his feet and body positioning, and he landed it in the next try! He was over the moon, and so was I!
